The Catastrophic 2007 Avalanche The most tragic event occurred on late Saturday night, March 31, 2007. Following torrential rains and exceptionally heavy snowfall across Chitral, a massive avalanche collapsed over Washich. • Impact: The disaster completely devastated houses, leaving at least 30 people dead in Washich village alone. • The Aftermath: Roads were completely blocked by snow and rocks, isolating the area. Local water mills froze or broke, and affected villagers had to protest for essential food supplies like flour and kerosene rather than tents, as they had to share crowded rooms with surviving neighbors in the freezing weather. 2. The 2021 River-Blocking Avalanche A highly unique event occurred in March 2021, where three days of continuous rain lashed the high-altitude pastures, causing a massive, unstable mass of snow to break loose. • Impact: Remarkably, there were no casualties because the entire mass channeled through the deep natural stream of Washich village. • The Phenomenon: The avalanche was so powerful and packed with momentum that its debris rushed all the way down, crossed the entire Chitral River, and deposited its remnants on the opposite bank at Zang Lusht village. While it didn't hit homes, it filled the local stream to capacity, leaving the village at extreme risk of flooding from subsequent minor snowmelts.
